Last updated 29 September 2026.

Home Scholar holds records about your family. What your children studied, when they did it, and photographs of their work. This page says plainly what we hold, where it lives, and who can reach it.

What we hold

Your account. Your name, your email address and a password we store only as a hash. If other adults join your household, the same for each of them.

Your children. A name, a grade level, and a date of birth if you choose to give one.

What your family did. Courses and lessons, the days you marked as taught, the minutes you logged, reading lists, grades, test scores and your written log entries.

What you upload. Photographs of work, book covers, score reports, and any files you attach.

We do not ask for a home address or a phone number. We do not take payment details, because there is nothing to pay for yet.

Photographs of your children

A photograph you upload is never given a public web address. There is no link that works without signing in, and none that can be guessed. Images are delivered only through our own interface, to a signed-in member of your household, and only for the children that person is allowed to see.

Your photographs are read on our own servers by software we run ourselves, so that a worksheet becomes searchable text and a contents page becomes a lesson list. They are not sent to a third-party image or AI service to do it.

Dates of birth

A child's full date of birth is encrypted where it is stored, and our interface never sends it back out. It is read in two places only: working out the grade a child belongs in, and filling in the notices your state requires. Everywhere else the app uses the birth year alone.

Who can see your records

Your household, and nobody else. Every record belongs to one household and queries cannot reach across that line.

Within your household you decide what each person can do. A co-parent, a grandparent, a tutor or a co-op teacher can each be given a different set of permissions, and a helper can be confined to particular children. A record outside that confinement is not hidden behind a message. It simply is not there for them.

Links you create on purpose

Two features work by giving somebody a link, and both put you in control of a secret. Treat these links the way you would treat a key.

Calendar subscriptions. A calendar feed is a long, unguessable web address that returns your schedule to whatever calendar app you paste it into. It has to work without a password, because Apple Calendar and Google Calendar cannot sign in on your behalf. Anyone holding the address can read that schedule. You can revoke a feed or rotate its address at any time, and the old one stops working immediately.

Portfolio sharing. When you share a portfolio with an evaluator we mint a long random token for that one share. You can put a password on it, you can give it an expiry date, and you can see when it was opened.

What we do not do

Where it is kept

On servers in the United States. Files are stored in Amazon Web Services and our email is sent through Amazon Simple Email Service, for account messages such as verifying an address or resetting a password. We send no marketing email.

Deleting things

When you delete a record it is withdrawn from view straight away and can still be restored for 30 days. After that it is destroyed. The one exception is a school year you have closed, where your state may require the record to exist for longer. That can only hold a record for longer than 30 days, never for less, so the date you were shown when you deleted stays true.

To delete your whole account and everything under it, write to [email protected] from the address on the account.

Children

Accounts are created by parents and guardians, not by children. Where you give a child their own sign-in, it reaches their own work and nothing else. The records about your children are yours: what goes in, and what comes out, is your decision.

Changes

If this page changes we will change the date at the top. If a change alters what we do with something you have already given us, we will tell you by email before it takes effect.

Asking us

Write to [email protected] with any question about this page, or to ask for a copy of what we hold about your family.
